I tried to upgrade to 9.10 today. Two big issues happened thanks to an over-dosage of "Out with the Old" syndrome.
First of all, they've changed grub. Instead of having grub1, they have grub2! Which is a pain since I just learned how to make my memory issues go away in grub1, I had to learn how to work with it all over again. Woohoo.
Luckily, those folks in #ubuntu are so friendly and helpful, I was able to do it... in two hours.
Second, and much worse, is that I seem to have a laptop that's considered "too old" by today's standards. My Inspiron 1420 and it's BCM4312 were considered so out of date, that the dev team plopped the driver in the 'legacy' spot. Unfortunately, I blew up my OS trying to fix it. So rather than keep going, I reinstalled 9.04.
Luckily, since I know all about memory issues, both installations went by perfectly in about 15 minutes each.
It just goes to show you, even if you try to do your important stuff the day BEFORE Friday the 13th, the bad luck travels back in time to foil you.

And as for the Favorite Gaming Platform in your description.... might I suggest "SDL" as a possible candidate? ^___^
[although that's really more of a framework...]
Those silly description things keep going out-of-date on me. I need to update those again. @_@

"... Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows...
I think you need to re-examine your assumptions."
